I find it hard to imagine why anyone would want to alter their appearance by plastic surgery. It’s a difficult and sometimes dangerous process, and of course success is never guaranteed. One of the reasons I hear that people give to justify the cost, and the pain, is that they will feel more confident after having it. And this may well be the case, but you would have to ask why there is a lack of confidence in the first place? If confidence can be improved or even restored by the altering of one’s appearance, it speaks volumes about the source of confidence in an individual.
Of course, good-looking people find favour just about everywhere. The natural tendency for society is to make judgements based on outward appearances and to value “beauty” highly. This is inherently unfair and biased, but it goes on. So the attraction of plastic surgery is understandable – women or men who maybe feel that they have been ignored or “passed over”, see this as a way of attracting attention, or getting people to listen to them. They may also do it to “feel better about themselves”, but if this “feelgood” element is based on outward appearance, it has a shaky foundation and all beauty is fading day by day.
I think we should make the most of what we have, and thank God for our uniqueness. Everyone was created to look a certain way – it’s part of that uniqueness. And do what we can to stay in shape (or get back into shape!).
